Parenting is not an overnight game. It’s a continuous process starting right form the conception to his/her adulthood. It is the process of nurturing and supporting their physical, emotional, social, economical, intellectual and cognitive development. Parenting does not refer to biological relationship only. Though the most common care takers in parenting are father, mother or both, there are also surrogates who plays the most important role in parenting which includes an older sibling, a grand-parent, a step-parent, a legal guardian, uncle, aunty, other family members or a family friend. Social organisation and government may also have role in parenting. In many cases orphanage or persons adopted a baby also refers to as parents. The parenting skill varies in individuals and the persons or organisations having good parenting skill are referred to as a good parent.

Parenting skills also vary according to different communities, different geographical locations, different races and different social classes. Culture, wealth, social class and income have a very strong role in method of child rearing. Cultural value plays major role in how a parent raises their child. However as social norms, traditions and cultural practices are being changed from time to time, so as parenting is also evolving time to time.

The socio-economical status of a family plays a major role in nurturing the child and the facilities to be available for the children. Lower working class children often grow up with a disadvantage with the parental attention, schooling and community. They usually lack the attention and networking of other family members and relatives that rich and middle class families do through helpful family members, relatives, communities and experts. Upper and middle class families usually can associate their children to the communities or networks, groups and professionals which lower working groups are unaware about. But as governments of different countries as well as different international and regional organisations are working on the development of socio-economical condition of the lower working groups, parenting in the particular group is also evolving.

The most important factor in raising a child is education of the parents. In many countries like India, education refers to the qualification or the amount of certificates they hold in a bunch of files and the so called educated parents transfer their ideology to their children and set their goal accordingly. Here I can say, many of the lower and middle class parents even don’t identified parenting as a task for themselves.

We can discuss about different issues in the consecutive articles. Stay tuned…
